Blackberry Curve 8520

The title states the name of my new phone. Second hand 3 month old from my sister who just upgraded to a Blackberry Bold. I got this phone for a steal. It was a little bit awkward as first trying to learn a new device (totally different from normal phones and PDA phones). It feels weird and awkwardly but after a while you kinda get a hang of it.

Some of the best features of this phones that I like is

1. optical track pad.

This is really awesome. I hate direction knobs and prefer 5 direction clickable but this really is a lot better. manuevering around the menus are smooth and a joyful experience.

2. Media Centre.

This is like very much as the video playback even supports .avi. and the resolution is really clear and crisp despite the phone’s screen actually being of lower Pixels than its bigger brothers. I watched Coraline in .avi format and the animation was just awesome. looking forward to watching more movies and series on the go.

3. Camera

with the option to immediately post pictures taken unto flicker and facebook, this option if really going to help me stay updated. epecially considering those who know me, know that I do not often update my blog or facebook. I am hoping this will help me update my blog more often.

4. Memory

being able to support up to 16GB micro SD card (which I have just bought and put in), I can now have tonnes of pictures, songs, movies, apps, and what nots in my phone that will keep me occupied and entertained while waiting for my doctors during work.

5. Weight

It is actually very light compared to my previous ASUS P527. Sometimes can’t even feel it in my pocket.

6. Battery Life

apparently it can be in standby mode for days and full usage can go on for like 2-3 days. have not really tried. will comment more when I have tested it out.

as of now, I have not gotten my Blackberry Internet Service and so will not comment (or rather am not able to comment) on all of the other applications like the facebook, youtube, emails and other stuff. The service should be activated somewhere tonight or tomorrow morning. Can’t wait. I have browsed some of the apps for blackberry and so far the free apps are somewhat better than those you gotta pay for. May be my requirement is weird. But even if you gotta buy an App, its not too expensive.

speaking of which, I WAS a Maxis subscriber but after getting the Blackberry, I have switched to DIGI. simply because the packages for DATA in Maxis is wayyy way to expensive. RM40 for 5MB, RM55 for 10MB andRM120 for unlimited, where for DIGI it is RM38 for 10MB (needs to be bolt onto at least a DG50) and RM58 for unlimited Blackberry Internet Services. check out below a comparison chart made by Daniel Lew (I found this on the net) for a quick and easy chart to compare.

apparently Celcom has a RM1 a day for BB services but I read in Lowyat.net forums that they always have connectivity problems and usually from 12am – 2am there will be service disruption and they always say upgrading service. so too bad and bye bye Celcom.

Check out the difference in pricing and you make your decision.
